Stephen Colberts Mother Dies at 92
Stephen Colbert‘s mother died Wednesday at the age of 92, possibly leading the late-night host to cancel the Thursday taping of The Colbert Report.??
A repeat episode aired on Thursday, and a tweet sent out by someone close to the show indicates that this was a last-minute decision made due to the death of Colbert’s mother, Lorna.??
Dan Dinello, who reportedly has worked with Colbert and whose nephew and son are on the staff of “the Report,” tweeted that Thursday’s show would be a rerun so Colbert could be with his family after his mother died, according to comedy news and reviews website Third Beat Magazine. Dinello also tweeted that Lorna Colbert died one hour prior to Wednesday night’s special hour-long episode featuring Paul McCartney, according to Third Beat. Both tweets have since been deleted.
The Comedy Central host previously suspended his show in February 2012, reportedly due to his mother’s ailing health.
When he returned, his only reference to his mother was the following remark: “Evidently, having 11 children makes you tough as nails. Confidential to a lovely lady.”
Lorna Colbert was the mother of 11 children, including the comedian and his sister, former congressional candidate Elizabeth Colbert Busch.
Lorna Colbert’s obituary in Charleston’s Post and Courier describes her as “the matriarch of a family of 82” and “an accomplished artist, a church leader, a businesswoman, a supporter of the arts and a woman whose profound faith was apparent in her daily life.”
She was born on Nov. 6, 1920, in Larchmont, N.Y.
The obituary includes a link to sign her guestbook, which had 54 entries as of Friday afternoon.
