Reformation's Linen Collection Is Going Viral And I Got To Try On The Entire Thing

I've always found it hard to feel polished in the heat. Hats off to those of you who appear cool, calm and sleek when poolside – but for the most part, that's not me. I've lost count of the number of sweaty beach pilgrimages I've made, my clothes sticking in all the wrong places and my mood quickly taking a nose dive.

There's only one fabric I've found to make hot weather dressing enjoyable, and that's linen. Strangely, it took me a while to get there – but building up a versatile linen collection over the past few years has helped me look ~chic~ while facing balmy climes.

Linen trousers are, clearly, a staple – breezy and effortless over a bikini on the beach, but also suited to relaxed summer weekends in London and early autumn office days when paired with a blazer or chunky knit. Linen short-and-shirt co-ords are big news (Gen-Z told me so), and can be dressed up for a sunset dinner with a pair of chunky sandals. Prada's padded Nappa leather sandals, ideally. And linen dresses? Their appeal needs little explanation.

Lots of premium brands do linen impeccably: Aje, Favorite Daughter, Toteme, Dôen. Zimmermann's SS24 collection is bursting at the seams with paisley printed linen maxis which nod to the infamous boho-chic trend that was revived by Chemena Kamali’s Chloé show in Paris. And elsewhere, Max Mara's modern and sophisticated approach to wardrobe classics translates into its neutral, forever-wearable linen trousers and blazers. But if you want to shop premium linen on a slightly more modest budget, which store should you make a beeline for?

If their SS24 linen collection is anything to go by, Taylor Swift-adored Reformation is the one. ICYMI, the LA-based brand – which was founded back in 2009 – marries fashion and environmental consciousness together perfectly, creating runway-inspired pieces with recycled fibres and innovative fabrics.

They've spent the past decade-and-a-half garnering an army of die-hard fans – from Kendall Jenner and Meghan Markle to Hailey Bieber, Emily Ratajkowski and Adele. And me. So, in a bid to add a few more linen pieces to my collection ahead of a girls' trip to Provence in July, I stopped by their London Covent Garden store to see what was on offer.

Roxy Linen Two Piece£248 at Reformation

Reformation have recently launched a new Linen collection, featuring shirts, bottoms and dresses made from flax, that basically requires no water to grow, and emits only a quarter of the carbon as cotton per pound of fiber.

Most of Ref's linen is also bluesign® or OEKO-TEX® 100 certified, meaning that it’s made without harmful chemicals. Plus, it has naturally cooling properties that come in very handy for flustered old me.

Last year, the iconic J.Lo honeymoon dress — the Tagliatelle — ended up being Ref's top performing linen style, and the pieces that snagged spots two and three on the best-sellers list included: the Olina Linen Pant and Robbie Linen Two Piece. I had high hopes.

Most Popular

My favourite piece turned out to be one I didn't actually expect to like: the Roxy two-piece with pearl-button detailing and monochrome trims. You can't see it here, but the linen “skirt” is actually a skort – which makes it so much more wearable than originally anticipated.

It was insanely comfortable, and I loved the fact that you get so many looks in one. Wear it “as is” for dinner on holiday, the top with a pair of jeans for dinner in the city, or the skort with a white tank top when you're exploring a local town or village. Yes. Please.

Olina Linen Pant£178 at Reformation

Next up, the most versatile piece I tried: the Olina Linen Pant. These oatmeal, tie-waist linen trousers are Reformation's hero pair of linen trousers each summer – available in an array of different colours and sizes, and crafted from 100% linen. They're available in a petite length if the regular leg won't work for you.

TBH, I probably needed to size up for a slightly more relaxed fit, but even when a little tighter, these were so comfortable. A staple for good reason, they'd look fab with an open linen shirt and bikini on holiday, or with a white t-shirt and leather jacket here in the UK. You could even dress them up with a blazer and heels for date night. I plan to.

Balia Linen Dress£298 at Reformation

At first glance, £300 for a linen dress felt a little steep – but the quality on this thing makes it so, so worth it. It manages to feel weighty and expensive yet breezy and wearable all at once – falling from a fitted bodice into a full, floaty skirt. I loved it. One thing to note, though: I found it to run large and a little too loose around my chest, so if you're in-between sizes, I'd recommend sizing down.

Grace Linen Two Piece£248 at Reformation

For those who favour a pop of colour, Reformation's Grace Linen two piece should be on your radar. Available to buy alongside the chicest longline linen pea coat you've ever seen in your life, this playful co-ord is another way to inject airy linen into your evening wardrobe.

The fashion set's obsessed with cherry red has been impossible to ignore of late, as seen in Sabato De Sarno’s first Gucci collection, and at Rabanne – so I was immediately drawn to the colour. The skirt fit snug around the waist, but wasn't restrictive around my hips – and the shell top had a flattering boat neckline that I just know I'll repeatedly reach for.

Azalea Linen Top£148 at Reformation

Straight from the runways at Copenhagen Fashion Week, tie-front blouses are the micro summer tops trend dominating wardrobes this season – and the Azalea linen top is one of the cutest of them all. Fun, flirty and feminine, it's also crafted from 100% linen, and has chunky capped sleeves with an elasticated back. I felt so comfortable in it.

Cora Linen Top£148 at Reformation

Another epic linen top, this time one which feels a little more modest and wearable. The Cora Linen top has been designed to tuck perfectly into high-waisted jeans (that, it did – just not pictured), and has capped sleeves which button together at the top of your back.

Lainey Linen Dress£148 at Reformation

Just when I thought I wasn't spoiled for choice enough, I took a final glance down the in-fitting-room iPad (which, very fancily, allows you to order extra sizes and styles to your changing room without having to speak to a member of staff). I spotted the Lainey linen dress – and after wearing Ref's green version in a similar cut to death last summer, I thought it rude not to give it a go.

I loved the unique, contrasting cups and straps which peak above the black linen bodice – and loved the relaxed, floaty fit. It has adjustable straps which I found to be really useful – I needed to shorten them to give myself enough coverage – and it's crafted from 100% linen. No surprises.

Balia Linen Dress£298 at Reformation

I loved the black Balia linen dress so much that I couldn't resist trying it on in white, too. Equally as fabulous, inspired by easy breezy cuts from aforementioned Aje and Toteme. I'd take this one home with me too, if I wasn't so clumsy.
