Fire and Ash Is Name of Avatar 3

There are few film franchises where a simple title reveal is enough to excite audiences. Avengers, Star Wars and James Bond among them. And then there’s Avatar, which stands as a class as its own.

While the franchise doesn’t have many films to its name, the first Avatar (2009) stands as the highest grossing film of all time, and sequel Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) holds the record for the third highest grossing movie ever.

So when James Cameron announced that his third Avatar will be titled Avatar: Fire and Ash, it was enough to spark big applause at D23 Friday.

“There are new cultures and settings and creatures, and new biomes. You will see a lot more of Pandora, the planet, that you’ve never seen before,” said Cameron of the movie. “The new film is not what you expect, but it’s definitely what you want.”

Cameron returns to direct the new Avatar, which has a script from Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. It once again stars Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana, and it is slated for Dec. 19, 2025. Disney and 20th Century Studios have two more Avatar films on the docket. Avatar 4 is dated for Dec. 21, 2029, while Avatar 5 is slated for Dec. 19, 2031.

Cameron is finishing up Avatar after the loss of longtime creative partner and producer Jon Landau, who died in July. Wrote Cameron of his friend: “A great producer and a great human being has left us. Jon Landau believed in the dream of cinema. He believed that film is the ultimate human art form, and to make films you have to first be human yourself. He will be remembered as much for his vast generosity of spirit as for the movies themselves.”
