Character Media and ChimeTV Merge to Form GoldenTV

Asian American publisher Character Media and Asian American cable network ChimeTV are officially joining forces.

The two companies most recently worked together in December, when ChimeTV aired Character Media’s first-ever televised Unforgettable Gala, the glittery awards ceremony known among Asians in Hollywood as “Asian Prom.” The 2023 edition, hosted by Simu Liu at the Beverly Hilton, was Unforgettable’s 21st gathering and toasted Past Lives’ Greta Lee, May December’s Charles Melton and Beef’s Steven Yeun, Young Mazino and Lee Sung Jin, among other honorees. With the merger, ChimeTV, which is billed as the first and only 24/7 Asian American cable network focused on general entertainment, will rebrand as Golden TV, the moniker of the newly formed Asian American media conglomerate that will include Character Media’s year-round digital editorial content and annual print issue.

“This partnership goes beyond content creation,” ChimeTV CEO Takashi Cheng said in a statement. “As we set to activate the Golden TV ecosystem, we mark a new era in API entertainment and media.”

ChimeTV is owned by the Southern California-based privately funded Asian American members club Society 1. Character Media is a subsidiary of Imperial Family Companies.

“The combined strengths of Character Media and ChimeTV will empower us to craft unparalleled content and opportunities,” IFC CEO and Character Media owner Andrew Lee said in a statement.

Added Character Media founder and publisher James Ryu in a statement, “Witnessing the merger of Character Media with ChimeTV is a dream come true. In addition to the business expansion, this merger is about establishing a voice and platform that mirrors the diversity and depth of the API community.”
